Google Play Books & Audiobooks just got an update. Did yours?
Issue 1 · Oct 6–12, 2026. Google Play lists an improvement to the ebook text-selection menu in this build, alongside existing options for bringing EPUB and PDF files into your library and reading purchased titles on other devices; availability can differ because Google Play rolls builds out over several days.

Start NowWhat changed this week
These are the three changes in Google Play Books & Audiobooks that stand out in the developer's update notes and on its Google Play listing this week.
- 01Easier ebook text selection
Google Play says the ebook text-selection menu is easier to use in this build. The notes do not specify which controls changed or describe additional selection tools.
- 02Bring personal files into your library
Uploading EPUB and PDF files is an existing Google Play Books feature, not a newly announced change. Google Play says those files can be read across your devices.
- 03Read eligible purchases on other devices
Google Play's notes also point to reading purchased ebooks and audiobooks on other devices, when publisher permissions allow it. This is a listed capability, not a new change.
Our call on whether to update, and the link to the official Google Play listing, are on this issue's Google Play Books & Audiobooks page.

Tips
- Try selecting a short passage
Open an ebook and select a brief passage to see how its text-selection menu works for your reading task. The notes say ease of use improved, but do not list specific controls, so avoid expecting a particular button or new capability. If something looks different, rely on the labels shown in the app and consult Google Play's current listing for the official change note.
- Keep personal files organized
If you bring your own EPUB or PDF files into the app, use a consistent naming approach on your device so it is easier to recognize titles in your library. The Play listing says these files can be read across devices, but does not explain every sync condition. Confirm you are using the intended account before expecting the same library elsewhere.
- Check publisher terms first
Before planning to read a purchase on a separate reader, check the title's available options and publisher restrictions. Google Play's notes qualify DRM-free access as dependent on the publisher, so this is not guaranteed for every ebook or audiobook. The listing gives examples of other readers, but does not promise compatibility for every model or title.
Menu names follow the developer's help pages and can differ slightly between versions and phones.
How we write the digest
Each week we check the Google Play listings of the apps our readers use most: the version number, the update date and the developer's What's new notes. When an app has a new version, we put the developer's update notes and the listing details together on one page, in plain words, with a link to the official Google Play listing. Google and most developers release updates in stages over several days, so a version listed here may not have reached your phone yet. Therapymetric is an independent site and is not affiliated with any developer. This page doesn't read your phone or your Google account, and nothing is installed from here.
FAQ
Is this the official list of Google Play Books & Audiobooks changes?
No. This is an independent site and is not affiliated with Google LLC. The app's Google Play page is the authority for the official listing and its current change notes. This summary uses the Play data supplied here, but the store listing may provide the most up-to-date details about availability and the build.
Why does Google Play show Open instead of Update?
Google Play rolls builds out over several days, so a listing may show Open while an update is not yet offered to everyone. Availability can also differ across devices. Check the app's Play page again later rather than assuming there is a problem; this update's notes do not give a specific rollout schedule beyond the general staged release.
Can every purchased book be read on another reader?
Not necessarily. Google Play's notes say purchased ebooks and audiobooks can be used on other devices, and specifically qualify DRM-free access as dependent on the publisher. That means title restrictions matter, and the listing does not promise every purchase will work on every external reader. Check the available options and terms for the particular book before relying on transfer.
